What is APR?

APR stands for annual percentage rate which, by itself, doesn’t explain much about the term. Your APR is the interest rate you are charged on your credit card balance over the course of a year.

Credit card interest is generally calculated daily — 1/365 of the APR is multiplied by your current balance and added to it. This process, called compounding, is repeated daily for as long as you carry a balance. However, any interest charged is typically forgiven if you pay your statement balance in full by the due date every month.

What does this mean for you? No interest payment, no worries about APR. If you pay your balance each month, it’s essentially a short-term, interest-free loan.

Types of rates and fees

  • Annual percentage rate (APR): The interest rate charged for the entire year. There are various types of APRs, from balance transfer, cash advance, penalty and purchase APRs. The most common APR type is your purchase APR, which is the interest rate charged to your credit card balance monthly.
  • Balance transfer APR: The APR charged to your account when you transfer one credit card balance to another. If you complete a balance transfer, you may have to pay a balance transfer APR and/or a balance transfer fee.
  • Cash advance APR: The APR charged to your account when you withdraw cash through an ATM or a bank with your credit card, up to your respective credit limit. If you complete a cash advance, you may have to pay a cash advance APR and/or a cash advance fee.
  • Introductory APR offer: A reduced APR for a defined period can help you avoid additional interest charges on purchases, balance transfers, and more during this time.
  • Penalty APR: The interest rate charged to your account when you fail to pay the minimum payment by your payment date.
  • Purchase APR: The interest rate charged to your account when you fail to pay the full outstanding balance (more than just the minimum payment) by your payment date.
  • Annual fee: The cost of owning your card, charged once per year. Some cards have no annual fees, while others can charge $550 (or more) per year.
  • Foreign transaction fee: The amount charged to your account when paying with a foreign currency. Some credit cards waive foreign transaction fees, while others can charge fees — usually up to 3% of each transaction.
  • Late payment fee: The amount charged to your account when you fail to pay the minimum payment by your payment date. In addition to the penalty APR charged to your balance, you’ll also be charged the late payment fee.
  • Over-the-credit limit fee: The amount charged to your account when you exceed your credit limit defined on your card.
  • Return payment fee: The amount charged to your account when your provided payment method for your credit card statement fails or bounces for reasons such as insufficient funds or account freezes or closures.
  • Return check fee: The amount charged to your account when your provided check for your credit card statement fails and cannot be processed for reasons such as insufficient funds or account freezes or closures.

What are the main benefits of a 0% APR credit card?

While it should be obvious that making purchases without accruing interest is a major benefit all on its own, there are other opportunities to leverage a 0% APR card. As mentioned above, in the event of a surprise such as an unexpected health emergency, these cards can be a lifesaver while you catch up on your finances.

They can also be used to help finance one-time purchases, such as getting a new roof or remodeling the bathroom. Of course, as always, we heavily recommend you pay the balance off before the promotion expires in order to avoid paying any interest. You should also be careful not to use a 0% APR card as an excuse to spend beyond your means. Instead, you should treat this like one element of your emergency fund and only tap into it when necessary.

How to choose the best 0% APR card

Everyone’s needs are different, so you’ll need to choose the best credit card for you. This is especially true if you’re looking to earn rewards while you spend. All of the cards listed above offer varied amounts and types of rewards for the money you spend, and you can choose which is best for you depending on their fees, reward categories, and which bank issuers the card.

Chase Freedom Unlimited: Best for bonus categories

In addition to a great bonus and earning structure, the Chase Freedom Unlimited offers a 0% APR introductory period for 15 months from account opening on new purchases (18.74% – 27.49% Variable APR applies after). This way, you can earn cash back while financing large purchases — just make sure you’re paying off your balance before the end of the intro APR period to avoid paying interest.

The Chase Freedom Unlimited earns 5% back on travel booked through Chase Ultimate Rewards, 3% on dining and drugstore purchases and 1.5% on all other eligible purchases.

It’s also a great card to pair with your existing Chase credit cards to earn cash back on non-bonus spending — in fact, it makes up one-third of the Chase Trifecta. If you have an Ultimate Rewards credit card, such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card or Chase Sapphire Reserve, you can combine rewards and take advantage of 25% to 50% Chase travel portal redemption bonuses and transfer partners. Since TPG values Ultimate Rewards points at 2 cents each, you’ll get a 3% return on all non-bonus spending when you pair the Freedom Unlimited with a Chase Ultimate Rewards card.
