Intro to the TPG App

  • The Points Guy (TPG) has been publishing hands-on advice to help readers maximize their travel experiences since the site debuted in June of 2010. What started as a points and miles blog by founder and CEO Brian Kelly, evolved into a lifestyle media brand with 10 million unique visitors a month and a social media audience of over 3 million across Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn and Twitter. We created the TPG App to help users learn about points and miles, maximize their earning potential, and discover how to efficiently use their rewards to travel better—all from the convenience of their mobile device.

  • Our valuations show you how much you could get for your points and miles, so you can maximize your rewards and get the most value for what you’ve earned. We pull 100 real-world flight prices for each airline and find their cent per point value by using this equation: Flight Price – Award Taxes / Points Required to Book. Then, we take our results and find the average cent per point value to determine the final airline valuation. For credit cards, we find the average cent per point value of its 5 most valuable transfer partners. https://thepointsguy.com/guide/monthly-valuations//

  • Whether you’re looking to learn more about award travel, need help maximizing your points and miles, or want to track your progress toward your dream destination, The Points Guy App will guide you through every step of the journey. Stay up to date with breaking news and trending topics, improve your spending habits with in-depth insights, and strengthen your points strategy with advice from travel experts. www.thepointsguy.com/app/

  • While other travel apps may keep track of your trip itinerary or help you find cash pricing for various routes, the TPG App does something entirely different. The TPG App helps you keep track of your points and miles across banks and airlines, teaches you how to improve your spending habits to earn the most points, and gives you the expert tricks and tips you need to book your dream trip. Similar to finance apps, you can track your spend through the TPG App, however, we’ll help you make sure you’re using the right cards to maximize the points you earn back!

  • Although the app is currently free, The Points Guy is part of an affiliate sales network. This means when you click to apply for credit card products using the links you find within the app, we receive compensation from the credit card company that issues the card. See our Advertising Policy for more details.

Cards wallet

  • You can sync as many credit cards as you’d like, but you can’t sign in to multiple accounts within the same program or bank.

  • Earned points are the points/miles you’ve been awarded by your credit card issuer for your spend on a specific card. For example, if you have a Chase Sapphire Preferred and an American Express Gold Card, you will have different points multipliers for certain categories. If you spend $100 on your Chase Sapphire Preferred card at a restaurant, you’ll earn 2X the points (200 earned points). However, your Amex Gold Card could have earned you 400 points. Therefore, you missed 200 points.

  • Your card’s approval date helps us track any sign-up bonuses you may be earning toward.

  • The TPG App does not support all credit cards across all banks.

    1. Tap on the card you want to delete
    2. Go to the three dots at the top right of the screen
    3. Scroll down and tap “Unsync and remove all X cards”
  • The TPG App only supports a small number of banks right now, but we’ll be adding more in the future. However, rather than supporting thousands of banks across the US, the TPG App will only focus on the ones that have the most valuable earning and transfer programs.

  • No—the TPG App does not allow you to transfer points across programs from within the app. However, transferring points is a great way to ensure you’re getting the most value for your points.

Check out these articles for more info:

    https://thepointsguy.com/guide/redeeming-chase-ultimate-rewards-maximum-value/
    https://thepointsguy.com/guide/redeeming-american-express-membership-rewards-maximum-value/
    https://thepointsguy.com/guide/redeeming-citi-thankyou-points-maximum-value/

  • Your points net worth is the sum of your points across all your banks and loyalty programs. For example, if you had 80,000 American Express Membership Rewards Points (valued at 2.0 cents) and 100,000 Marriott Bonvoy Points (valued at 0.8 cents), your points net worth would be 180,000 points with an estimated cash value of $2,200 ($1,600 for the American Express Membership Rewards Points and $800 for the Marriott Bonvoy Points).

  • Because some programs have expiration dates on their points, The TPG App helps you keep track of when your points will expire and will notify you when you’re nearing expiration dates.

Award explorer

  • You can’t book a flight directly within the app, but we’ll still provide you with booking instructions based on the program you’re booking with.

    1. Tap on the More tab
    2. Tap “View your profile”
    3. Tap the “Home Airport” row
  • Tap the heart icon a second time to unsave your trip.

  • Because the TPG App is just an estimation tool, dates are not needed. We simply calculate the average cost (in points/miles) for that flight.

  • Dynamic pricing means that the airline may have changing prices for each route—often due to demand.

Distance-based pricing refers to pricing that is done by bucketed lengths of trips, where the price is based on the number of miles your trip is.

Region-based pricing refers to pricing that is bucketed by consistent prices for flying from Region A to Region B. Most programs define their own regions.

  • Use our cash value figure—The TPG App uses TPG’s unique valuations to assess the cash value of the number of miles required for your journey. It’s considered a good price if it’s cheaper to fly using miles (based on the TPG Valuations) compared to the cash value.

  • Off-peak pricing refers to the cost of a flight during an unpopular time to travel (which means it’s usually cheaper). This is established by the airline program themselves, not The Points Guy. Note that not all airlines have peak and off-peak pricing.

  • These are airlines that have some type of formal relationship, often as part of a major alliance. Travelers can often earn or redeem miles in a given loyalty program across partner airlines, and elite members may enjoy additional benefits on select partners. https://thepointsguy.com/award-charts/

  • These are airlines and hotels that have partnered with a major credit card issuer, allowing cardholders to convert their earnings to points or miles in the corresponding airline or hotel loyalty program. https://thepointsguy.com/guide/a-guide-to-earning-transferable-points/

  • Please submit a support ticket within the More section of the app and we’ll help you out!

  • Click the three dots in the top right corner of your home screen, and tap “Adjust feed.”

Account connection & troubleshooting

    1. Tap on the More tab
    2. Tap “View your profile”
    3. Tap “Delete Account”
    1. Tap on the card you want to update
    2. Go to the three dots at the top right of the screen
    3. Tap “Update card accounts” and select your card from the list
  • Please submit a support ticket within the More section of the app and we’ll help you out!

  • We try our best to categorize your transactions the same way your bank does, but sometimes our categories won’t match up exactly. You can manually edit how the app categorizes a transaction, but keep in mind your bank will always be the most accurate source. To manually change your transaction category:

    1. Tap Cards
    2. View “Full Report”
    3. Select the category that the transaction has been categorized as
    4. Select the transaction
    5. Tap “Edit category” underneath the icon
  • You can recategorize your transactions on the TPG App for better tracking of your spend, but it doesn’t change the bank’s classification of that transaction and therefore doesn’t change the number of points you’ll be awarded for a particular transaction.

  • When an account has been connected for the first time, it can take up to 5-10 minutes for your transactions to sync.

  • Please submit a support ticket within the More section of the app and we’ll help you out!

  • When connecting an account for the first time, we’ll only gather up to 3 months of your data history.

  • The TPG App Award Explorer is an estimation tool and does not provide real-time pricing or award availability. To get an exact price, contact the airline.

  • Please submit a support ticket within the More section of the app and we’ll help you out!

  • Currently, the TPG App is only available in the US App Store for devices running iOS 13.0 and later.
